World’s largest duty free mall set to open in Sanya, China

These days everything we buy is made in China, so why not start buying it in China? The Chinese Government is looking to increase tourist activity to the tropical district of Sanya by building the world’s largest duty free mall, which according to the China Duty free group will cover over 70,000 square meters. The aim of the shopping center is to compete with duty free shops in Hong Kong and Singapore and as such, it will stock all the major international luxury brands. Hainan Provincial Duty Free Co Ltd. Is looking to further expand the duty free shopping sector by creating what they are calling a “duty free shopping paradise in the Mission Hills Tourism Town Center in Haikou. This massive projects will encompass 12 golf courses and a shopping center of over 100,000 square meters, which will add up to being about 1/3rd the size of Hong Kong.

The district of Hainan recorded an estimate 33 million tourists last year, with many of the tourists being attracted to the island’s two duty free stores. Sanya duty free store recorded sales figures of $159 million, which led to the government changing the duty free quota from $795 to $1,273.
